KUCHING, October 23 — Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg announced on Friday that the State Legislative Assembly will be dissolved on October 26, paving the way for the 13th state election.
Abang Johari said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had consented to his request during a press conference in Kuching.
The dissolution will trigger a state election that must be held within 60 days, with the Election Commission responsible for announcing nomination and polling dates.
The 82-seat assembly held its final sitting on Wednesday, during which the Sarawak Budget 2027 was passed. The current assembly term was originally scheduled to expire in February 2027.
But the early dissolution will bring forward the state election. In the December 2021 election, Abang Johari’s Gabungan Parti Sarawak coalition secured 76 seats, while Parti Sarawak Bersatu won four and DAP secured two.
