BUKIT MERTAJAM, Nov 10 – The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry’s (KPDNKK) office in Penang is actively monitoring online activities involving the sale of fake products. Its Penang director Mohd Nawardi Saad said it would take time to identify the culprits and locations they were operating from.

“In this regard, we will work together with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Royal Malaysian Police. This year as of Nov 6, the Penang KPDNKK office had disposed of fake products involving 812 cases worth RM1.8 million,” he told reporters here Monday.

“297 of the cases were under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011; Weights and Measures Act 1972 (177); Trade Description Act 2011 (130); Consumer Protecton Act 1999 (89); and Control of Supplies Act 1961 (38). Twenty-one cases were under the Copyright Act 1987; five, under the Direct Sales and Anti-Pyramid Scheme Act 1993, and 55 under the Hire Purchase Act 1967,” he said.

Nawardi said the disposed products included computer sets, 75,000 DVDs, CDs, VCDs, documents, shirts, slacks, shoes, spectacles and telephone accessories. He said the biggest seizure this year comprised pirated products worth more than RM750,000. He said the KPDNKK would act more aggressively to minimise the activities.
