PUTRAJAYA, Jan 4 – Women, Family and Community Development Minister, Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim has urged all media channels including the social media to refrain from giving too much coverage on the teenage girl who claimed she was abducted.
In the meantime, she also said that everyone should give space to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident involving Amirah Atirah Abdul Majid, 14, who claimed she was kidnapped from her house in Klang last Sunday.
“Too much coverage will have a negative effect on the teenager and her family members. The photographs revealed may also be detrimental, psychologically,” she said in a statement issued here Sunday when commenting on the case of the teenage girl who claimed she was kidnapped in Bandar Sultan Suleiman, Klang, but was later found safe with a man believed to be her boyfriend, near a petrol station in Banting, on Friday.
She said the girl would be placed temporarily under the care of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) upon her discharge from hospital, at the request of her parents, after considering the safety factors. Rohani said the ministry viewed the matter seriously as the girl had raised much concern from various quarters, especially her parents, and the incident should not have happened.
She said she would like to urged that the parents and guardians to pay serious attention to their children and spend more time listening to and sharing their problems. In additional, she also hope that the children won’t turn to a third party for attention and advice.
“Parents facing such problems with their children can seek advice from the counsellors at JKM or the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN). The ministry, through JKM, would be following closely the case and would provide appropriate assistance for the teenage girl, her parents and family members,” said Rohani.
