JOHOR BAHARU, Jan 18 – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong is confident Malaysia can still offer job opportunities despite many new graduates complaining of lack of jobs that matched their qualification. He said as long as the national economy continued to grow by four to five percent, job opportunities were always available.

“To me, there is no excuse for the locals not to be able to attain success, especially when we are Malaysians. Why can’t we emulate the foreigners who are willing to do work in construction sites just to earn a living,” he told reporters after officiating the third Johor Career and Graduates Expo here Sunday.

Hence he wanted the graduates to be more realistic and pragmatic when being offered jobs with low starting salaries. The Ayer Hitam Member of Parliament said it was common for any companies to refuse paying high salaries to new graduates as they had yet to gain sufficient knowledge and experience in their chosen field. Graduates, he said, should improve their communication skills by making English their priority in order to be competitive.
