KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 – PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) will open contra lanes in several critical stretches along the North-South Highway to ensure smooth traffic flow during the Chinese New Year. Its managing director Datuk Noorizah Abdul Hamid said this was necessary in order to accommodate the 1.6 million vehicles which will be on the highway then.

However, Noorizah said the activation of the contra lanes would depend on traffic conditions and is subject to police approval, she said at the PLUS media briefing for the traffic condition during the Chinese New Year festive season held at Persada Plus, here Thursday.

The proposed contra lanes are from KM259 to KM270 Ipoh to the Menora tunnel (both directions) and KM209.4 to KM292.4 Simpang Pulai to Gopeng (southbound). There will also be contra lanes from KM346.6 to KM348.6 Ladang Bekam-Bidor (both directions), KM364.5 to KM368.5 Slim River-Sungkai (northbound) and KM397.1 to KM398.6 along the Tanjung Malim-Slim River stretch (northbound).

Contra lanes will also be open from KM436.4 to KM439.5 from the Rawang lay-by up to the Rawang rest-and-service area (RSA) as well as KM261.1 to KM255.1 Seremban-Senawang. She added that PLUS had also issued a Travel Time Advisory (TTA) for the highway especially during the peak days from Feb 5 to 14.

“We advise the public to use the TTA schedule as based on studies, it can help improve travelling, and PLUS will also have 3,200 staff on duty at the toll plaza. PLUS will also increase the number of patrols, provide emergency assistance teams and additional tow trucks at selected locations,” she said.
