KUALA LUMPUR, Jun 6 – No Malaysian was involved in an incident involving a shooting and hostage situation in Melbourne, Australia yesterday, Wisma Putra has confirmed. In a statement here today, it also strongly condemned the incident undertaken by the perpetrator identified as Yacqub Khayre, 29, from Roxburgh Park.

It was earlier reported the perpetrator had a history of violence and was acquitted over the Holsworthy terror plot in 2009. He was killed in the incident yesterday. He had taken a woman hostage and killed a man believed to be a Chinese Australian who was an employee at the Buckingham Serviced Apartments in Brighton. Yacqub was believed to have sought the woman he held as hostage after he had arranged to meet her through an escort service at the apartment. — Bernama
