PUTRAJAYA, January 3 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been urged to intervene regarding the 958 contract workers of the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) who have completed their service. The secretary of the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC), Kamarul Baharin Mansor said, despite serving on a contract which is a daily wage, there are among them who have worked for ten years.
“We are appealing to the PM to reinstate these workers because they are subordinate workers who get paid RM65 a day,” he said. According to him, the total of 958 contract workers covers all IRB branches in the country. When these workers are dismissed now, they have lost their income for a mouthful of rice,” he said when met by reporters after submitting an appeal letter to Anwar through Senior Political Secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin on Tuesday.
Previously, the IRB said in a statement that the board had informed in advance about the position of the contract workers. The move is to ensure that the employees involved can find another job before the service period ends on December 31. Meanwhile, Shamsul said, the matter has been informed to Anwar to be investigated and resolved.
