GEORGE TOWN, May 24 – The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) is renewing its call for a ban on firecrackers and fireworks in Malaysia to protect pets and wildlife during festive seasons. CAP fully supports the recent call made by Christine Chin, Chairman of the Selangor Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), to safeguard domestic animals from the harmful effects of explosive firecrackers and fireworks. Animals’ hearing is much more sensitive than humans, and the loud explosions from fireworks can physically hurt and permanently damage their hearing.

The sound of explosions and the bright bursts of lights can be terrifying to both domestic pets and wildlife, leading to stress and anxiety that can threaten their lives. In addition, the commotion from firecrackers and fireworks can cause dogs and cats to run away in fear, become lost and homeless, or be involved in traffic accidents while fleeing in a panic state. Wildlife, on the other hand, can become disoriented or fly into buildings, causing harm to themselves and others.

CAP has been advocating for a ban on fireworks and firecrackers for more than two decades, citing their environmental and health impacts. The gases produced by fireworks can cause great discomfort and even trigger asthma attacks in allergic children. Moreover, fireworks have the potential to cause serious injuries, including permanent disabilities, loss of limbs, and loss of hearing. Despite the dangers posed by fireworks and firecrackers, the Local Government Development Minister, Nga Kor Ming, recently legalized their sale in an effort to curb smuggling.

CAP argues that there are strong grounds, both environmentally and legally, for banning these items to prevent environmental pollution, protect people’s safety, safeguard property, and maintain a harmonious social order. In light of these concerns, CAP is reiterating its call for a blanket ban on the sale of fireworks and firecrackers to the public. By doing so, we can prevent accidents and injuries and protect the wellbeing of our pets and wildlife.
