KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 – UMW Group’s subsidiary, UMW Industrial Power Services Sdn. Bhd. (UIPS), has been appointed as the authorized distributor of INNIO’s Jenbacher engines in Malaysia, signaling UMW’s entry into the green and renewable energy sector. This move aligns with UMW’s Sustainability Pillar and supports Malaysia’s goal of achieving 100% carbon neutrality by 2050 as outlined in the 12th Malaysia Plan. To introduce UIPS’s venture into the green energy sector, UMW and INNIO Jenbacher organized the Biogas, Moving Forward Green Energy Forum today.

The forum showcased INNIO’s product range and shared technological updates on Jenbacher engines, while UIPS highlighted its capabilities as a comprehensive solution provider for the industry. During the forum, YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, delivered a keynote address and presented the MyHijau Mark certificate to Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali, President & Group CEO of UMW Holdings Berhad. The MyHijau Mark certification, issued by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), acknowledges the environmental-friendly nature of the Jenbacher gas engines.

The event witnessed the presence of industry leaders, including Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman, Group Chairman of UMW Holdings Berhad, and Megat Shahrul Azmir, President of Equipment Division, UMW. Also in attendance were H.E. Andreas Launer, the Austrian Ambassador to Malaysia, Carsten Dommermuth, Vice President & Managing Director of INNIO’s Jenbacher product brand in the APAC region, and Carl Richers, Vice President of Product Management & Marketing for INNIO’s Jenbacher product brand. The MyHijau Mark certification opens opportunities for the product to be a preferred choice for green procurement.

Customers of UIPS can benefit from Green Income Tax Exemption (GITE) and Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA) through the certification. Moreover, the certification enables UIPS to promote Jenbacher gas engines and provide sales and maintenance support to biogas plant developers with Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Feed-in Tariff (FiT) quotas, as well as palm oil mill owners for their power generation needs. INNIO, an Austrian-based global energy solution and service provider, focuses on power generation and compression using renewable energy sources. Jenbacher engines contribute to sustainable and economical power for businesses and industries aiming for a green hydrogen future.

These engines operate on a wide range of energy sources, from natural gas to hydrogen and renewable gases like biogas, playing a significant role in the global transition to achieve net-zero emissions. While acknowledging Malaysia’s progress in transitioning to a lower carbon energy system, YB Nik Nazmi emphasized the need to further reduce reliance on fossil fuels.  He outlined the government’s plans to improve policy frameworks, develop ambitious energy transition plans, and participate in strategic discussions to foster energy transformation. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman, Chairman of UMW Holdings Berhad, highlighted the company’s commitment to building a sustainable nation through the CREST@UMW strategy.

UMW aims to promote green products and expand its role by adding INNIO’s Jenbacher engines to its offering. With an estimated capacity of up to 100 MW of biogas plants expected to come online in the next five years, UMW anticipates a growing demand for gas engines, driven by yearly FiT quotas and carbon capture and emission controls enforced by the government. Carl Richers, Vice President of Product Management & Marketing for INNIO’s Jenbacher product brand, emphasized the clean energy and heat generation capabilities of Jenbacher engines from bio waste, significantly reducing CO2 emissions. Operating on natural gas or renewable energy sources, these engines can achieve impressive electrical efficiencies of up to 48.7%.

When configured for combined heat and power, the overall efficiency can reach an impressive 95%. INNIO remains committed to delivering solutions that contribute to a greener and more sustainable future, supporting Malaysia’s journey towards 100% carbon neutrality. The Green Energy Forum aims to foster proactive dialogue among stakeholders in the biogas industry, fostering cooperation and innovative collaborations to advance Malaysia’s green agenda. Government agencies, including the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA), MGTC, and SEDA, participated in the forum, engaging in discussions on the nation’s green energy agenda and renewable energy initiatives.
