KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 – In a recent development, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has fully surrendered the responsibility of addressing the statement made by Kedah’s Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, regarding Penang’s ownership. Anwar labeled the statement as irresponsible and confirmed that the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has initiated an investigation under relevant legal provisions. During the Minister’s Question Time (MQT) session in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday, Anwar expressed his concerns over Sanusi’s claim that Penang belonged to Kedah.
He emphasized that the investigation is being conducted under the Penal Code and the Sedition Act, with a portion of the report already submitted to the Attorney General for further action. Anwar pointed out that the Federal Constitution clearly delineates Penang as a separate state within Malaysia, distinct from Kedah, as stated in Clause (2) Article 1. He questioned the motive behind raising such an issue, suggesting that sacrificing constitutional principles for the sake of political power could lead to chaos and problems.
The Prime Minister’s response came in reply to Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan), who had asked for action to be taken regarding Sanusi’s call to amend the Federal Constitution and erase the division between the people of Penang. Anwar expressed hope that the investigation and subsequent legal action, spearheaded by the Attorney General, would promptly address the matter. He stressed that the issue had violated the principles of the Constitution, which were approved by the Council of Rulers.
Sanusi’s claim, made on Monday, that Penang was under Kedah’s ownership has stirred controversy. The PAS leader of Kedah also asserted that only Perak and Perlis share a border with Kedah. Anwar advised Sanusi to familiarize himself with the Constitution, which clearly designates Penang as one of the states in the Peninsula. He reiterated that the position of Penang as a separate state within Malaysia is guaranteed under the Federal Constitution’s provisions.
While acknowledging the historical association between Penang and Kedah, Anwar highlighted that the British acquisition of Penang and Seberang Perai, similar to Malacca, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak, changed the territorial arrangement. Anwar concluded by emphasizing that Malaysia is now an independent and sovereign country, and the issue of Penang’s ownership should not be raised, especially considering the constitutional framework in place.
As the investigation progresses and legal actions are taken, the government aims to address the issue and maintain the integrity of constitutional principles that underpin the unity and stability of the nation.
