PETALING JAYA, July 1 – The Malaysian Democratic Alliance Party (Muda) has emphasized that its decision to contest the State Election (PRN) independently is not driven by a thirst for power, but rather to be the voice of the people and provide checks and balances in the political landscape. In response to Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad’s statement regarding Muda’s decision to go solo in the PRN in six states, Muda President Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman dismissed the notion that their actions are futile.

Syed Saddiq believes that what citizens truly desire is a robust system of checks and balances to ensure their voices are not ignored or marginalized. He stated that Muda offers candidates who will serve as a system of checks and balances, advocating for the people and prioritizing new politics beyond merely obtaining seats in the State Legislative Assembly. While Muda may not have control over state governments, Syed Saddiq assured that the party will work diligently for the people, acting as their voice and ensuring that no one takes their concerns for granted.

Dr. Mahathir’s comments criticized Muda’s decision to field candidates in several state assembly seats, suggesting that it does not contribute to the formation of a government. However, Syed Saddiq stressed that Muda’s purpose extends beyond government formation and focuses on bringing about meaningful political change. Addressing the lack of political experience among many Muda leaders, Syed Saddiq acknowledged their idealism and commitment to the party’s long-term struggle.

He expressed determination to continue striving for change, even if it means facing setbacks along the way. Syed Saddiq further clarified that he is not the right person to comment on Muda’s status within the Unity Government. He acknowledged that he is not involved in their discussions and suggested that inquiries about the Unity Government should be directed to its leader. With their focus on checks and balances and representing the interests of the people, Muda remains steadfast in their pursuit of a developed, dignified, and integrity-driven Malaysia.
