KUALA LUMPUR, August 3 – Harnessing Gender Equality: Empowering the Voices of Women and Girls for an Infinite World of Opportunities is the theme for World Population Day 2023. This theme aligns with the current government’s initiatives to collectively address population issues and empower women while advancing gender equality in national development.
The Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM) through the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) believes that World Population Day deserves attention and serves as a platform to raise awareness among the public regarding current population issues, particularly those related to gender equality.
This aligns with the various initiatives implemented by the government to empower the target groups under the purview of KPWKM through the country’s commitment to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Malaysia also expresses its commitment and solidarity with United Nations member states to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030 agenda.
In conjunction with this year’s World Population Day, KPWKM, in collaboration with the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the University of Malaya (UM), will organize a forum on population issues that will delve into and explain the theme. The forum, scheduled for the end of July, will involve a panel of experts in population issues and gender equality.
