KUALA LUMPUR, August 19 – PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Malaysia’s national oil and gas company PETRONAS, has achieved significant milestones with the discovery of six oil and gas reserves in five blocks off the coast of Sarawak, Malaysia. The discoveries, which include the Gedombak well in Block SK306 and the Mirdanga well in Block SK411 (Balingian province), the Sinsing well in Block SK313, the Machinchang and Pangkin wells in Block SK301B, and the Kalung Emas well in Block SK315 (West Luconia province), demonstrate the untapped exploration potential of Malaysia’s basins.
These discoveries are the outcome of PETRONAS Carigali’s intensive domestic exploration drilling campaign that began in late 2022, leading to the significant Nahara-1 oil discovery in Block SK306 last year. Datuk Adif Zulkifli, PETRONAS Executive Vice President and CEO of Upstream, expressed delight in the successful discoveries, highlighting the untapped potential of Malaysia’s basins and inviting more companies to participate and invest in the country’s Upstream sector, especially in exploration activities.
The achievements are credited to PETRONAS Carigali’s innovative “clustered exploration” approach, a unique prospecting method designed for highly matured geological provinces. PETRONAS Vice President of Exploration, Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman, expressed the company’s commitment to continue challenging norms and defying long-standing beliefs while enhancing exploration efforts.
Looking ahead, PETRONAS Carigali aims to replicate this success in its other exploration ventures across Malaysia. With a focus on ensuring energy security and supporting the energy transition, the company intends to leverage its expertise and techniques to drive growth and innovation in the oil and gas industry.
