KUALA LUMPUR, October 28 – The recent fifth JKR BIM Day, a collaboration between Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) and the Organisation of BIM Malaysia, marked a significant milestone in Malaysia’s construction and design sector. This event underlined the transformative potential of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in line with the National Construction Policy 2030 and the Industrial Revolution 4.0. BIM Day, initiated in 2015, has evolved into a biennial gathering to spotlight the advantages and transformative power of BIM in the Malaysian context.
This year’s event was especially noteworthy as it aligned with the upcoming National Technical Profession Day (HPTN) scheduled for December 2023. Gathering 400 attendees, including JKR officials, government representatives, academics, contractors, and consultants, the event encompassed an exhibition, seminar, forum, and awards presentation. These components were thoughtfully structured to promote BIM comprehension, foster human capital development in BIM, and facilitate strategic networking. The seminars featured 25 expert speakers categorized into Knowledge Arena, Project Showcase, and Technology Update sessions.
A forum with four distinguished panelists allowed participants to gain insights from BIM implementation leaders. Director-General of Jabatan Kerja Raya, Datuk Ir Ahmad Redza Ghulam Rasool, the guest of honor, emphasized the critical role of digital transformation in Malaysia’s construction sector. He shared JKR’s vision to achieve 70 percent BIM usage in its projects this year and a target of 90 percent by 2025. In July, the Minister of Works announced that 297 road and building development projects across Malaysia had been successfully implemented using BIM and Industrial Building System (IBS) methods.
Conversations during the event were centered around BIM’s scalability and potential synergy with Industry 4.0 technologies. Razak Wong, President of the Organisation of BIM Malaysia, emphasized, “Embracing BIM is not just about staying current, it is about looking forward. The synergy between BIM and Industry 4.0 technologies opens limitless opportunities, allowing us to construct not just buildings but a smarter and more efficient future for Malaysia.” Key industry players, including Trimble, Perunding Irzi, MPro, Salur Kuasa, UTNM, Geodelta, Nextdor Property Communications, and Maltimur, contributed to the success of BIM Day.
The event seeks to promote the widespread adoption of BIM practices and enhance Malaysia’s global competitiveness within the construction industry. The celebration of BIM Day will culminate in a gala dinner featuring the prestigious Autodesk-JKR ASEAN Innovation and BIM Awards ceremony, recognizing outstanding BIM practitioners and projects. This event symbolizes the successful partnership between JKR and Autodesk, a global software company known for its 3D design and engineering solutions. A keynote address by the Minister of Works, YB Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, will underscore the industry’s significance.
