KUALA LUMPUR, January 31 – In a solemn ceremony at the 264th special meeting of the Conference of Rulers in the throne room of Istana Negara, Balairung Seri, Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar took the oath of office today as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong for a five-year term. The event marks a historic moment as Sultan Ibrahim assumes the throne after the conclusion of Pahang ruler Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s tenure. Simultaneously, Sultan Nazrin Shah of Perak was sworn in as the deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the same period.
The installation of Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar as Malaysia’s 17th King was met with grandeur and enthusiasm, as thousands gathered in Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur to welcome the monarch. Dressed in the Johor Military Force uniform, Sultan Ibrahim took the oath of office at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur in the presence of dignitaries, including Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The ceremony marked the commencement of Sultan Ibrahim’s five-year term as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, fueling hopes among the public for positive changes in the economy, diplomacy, and national unity.
The transition of power in Malaysia’s rotational monarch system follows the unique order of the country’s nine rulers, each taking turns to assume the role of the king for five-year cycles. Sultan Ibrahim’s election in October 2023 holds particular significance, succeeding the term of Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, which concluded on January 30. The large crowds that lined the monarch’s journey from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur reflect the public’s anticipation and optimism for Sultan Ibrahim’s leadership in shaping the nation’s future.
