KUALA LUMPUR, March 17 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said revealed today that the long-awaited Parliamentary Services (Amendment) Bill is nearing completion, signaling a significant step towards empowering Parliament. Azalina noted that the bill is currently undergoing finalization, with the process nearly 90 percent complete.
During a parliamentary session, Azalina emphasized the government’s commitment to granting Parliament autonomy in determining its direction and facilities, extending beyond the Speaker or Parliament staff to encompass all Members of Parliament (MPs). She underscored the importance of ensuring parliamentary independence and transparency, aligning with the government’s “madani” approach, which prioritizes action over mere rhetoric.
Azalina’s remarks came in response to inquiries from DAP’s Raub MP Chow Yu Hui, who sought updates on the bill’s progress, its objectives, and a potential timeline. Azalina expressed confidence in garnering bipartisan support for the bill, asserting its potential to benefit not only the public but also MPs across party lines. The bill’s revival aims to restore Parliament’s autonomy, enabling it to reclaim its voice and serve as a robust platform for accountability and representation.
