GEORGE TOWN, April 27 – In response to recent public concerns over increased water tariff rates, the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) clarified that the adjustments are part of a nationwide initiative affecting multiple Malaysian states and federal territories. Governed by the Federal Government, Penang’s water rates have been subject to revisions in alignment with federal regulations since the state’s integration into the National Water Services Industry Restructuring Initiative (NWSIRI) in 2011.
PBAPP, as the licensed water supply operator, has diligently adhered to Federal directives, transparently communicating the revised rates since February 1st, 2024, to ensure widespread awareness among consumers. The revised rates, meticulously detailed across consumption categories, underscore PBAPP’s commitment to Federal guidelines in billing for water supply services. Despite the adjustments, Penang maintains one of the lowest average domestic water rates in Malaysia, particularly for the initial 35 cubic meters per month, reflecting PBAPP’s ongoing efforts to balance affordability and accessibility for consumers amidst evolving regulatory landscapes.
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow reiterated that the rate hike, long overdue after almost 30 years without revision, is necessary to fund essential infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the state’s water resilience. He emphasized that while the increase may seem significant, the actual cost to consumers remains relatively low, averaging only 20 sen per day per individual, and the bimonthly billing system, in fact, leads to savings for consumers compared to monthly billing.
