GEORGE TOWN, April 30 – In a move to preserve Penang’s rich cultural heritage, the state government has disbursed RM6.5 million in incentives to owners of Category I heritage buildings for restoration works. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow handed out mock cheques to 47 recipients selected from 76 applications, marking the initial phase of the federal-funded heritage conservation initiative. Category I buildings, encompassing houses of worship, clan associations, and community organizations, are vital components of Penang’s historical landscape.

With 437 applications received for Category II buildings, Chow assured that successful recipients would be announced in stages by mid-May. The initiative aims to provide technical support and consultation to building owners throughout the repair process, ensuring the preservation of Penang’s architectural treasures for future generations. This conservation effort is part of a broader initiative supported by a RM25 million grant from the federal government, dedicated to heritage conservation initiatives in George Town.

With projects spanning from physical restoration to capacity building and accessibility enhancements, Penang is committed to safeguarding its cultural legacy while promoting sustainable tourism and community resilience.
