KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 – Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) president Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani has voiced concerns over ongoing non-compliance with the RM1,500 minimum wage order, which was implemented two years ago. Despite the order coming into effect in 2022, Effendy highlighted that there are still unscrupulous employers failing to adhere to the mandated minimum wage, urging the government to take more assertive measures in enforcement. Effendy’s remarks came during a press conference held after the MTUC Dinner and 2024 Labour Day celebration in Ipoh.
He emphasized the importance of effective enforcement to ensure all workers receive fair wages, suggesting that a comprehensive review of the order be conducted to address the rising cost of living and further benefit Malaysian workers. The implementation and enforcement of minimum wage regulations not only safeguard workers’ rights but also contribute to the nation’s economic growth by enhancing local workers’ income. Effendy stressed the need for a balanced approach between employers and employees to reduce reliance on foreign labor and promote equality in the workplace.
