GEORGE TOWN, May 7 — Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow announced that the Penang undersea tunnel project is currently under review to accommodate the expansion plans for the Penang Port. Speaking during a luncheon dialogue session with the Malaysia International Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MICCI), Chow highlighted the need for port expansion in light of Penang’s significant contribution to the nation’s exports. Chow clarified that while the project is under review, there has been no decision regarding its cancellation or alteration.

The steering committee, led by state exco Zairil Khir Johari, is tasked with scrutinizing the Penang Port Commission’s (PPC) 30-year Development Master Plan before making recommendations. The expansion plans for the port, particularly the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT), may affect the proposed location of the undersea tunnel, prompting the need for a review. Additionally, Chow welcomed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of Perak’s approval to supply water to Penang through the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park, signaling progress in long-standing discussions between the two states.
