KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 – An anti-corruption advocacy group, Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M), is calling upon Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari to intervene in the awarding of a transport project to a start-up allegedly linked to a minister’s husband. The project in question involves a new demand-responsive transit (DRT) system in the Klang Valley, awarded to Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd through direct negotiation.
TI-M criticizes this move, stating that it contradicts the principles advocated by the government and urges for a transparent tender process to maintain public trust in governance. The issue has raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest, particularly due to the involvement of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh’s husband, Ramachandran Muniandy, who serves as the CEO of Asia Mobility. TI-M highlights the importance of transparency in procurement processes to uphold integrity and prevent perceptions of corruption.
While Asia Mobility defends its selection, citing the specialized nature of the service, TI-M emphasizes the need for fair competition and accountability in government contracts.
