SEPANG, June 14 – The National Sports Council (NSC) will award the national sepak takraw team a special incentive of RM170,000 following their remarkable performance at the 2024 Sepak Takraw World Cup held in Kuala Lumpur. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that the inter-regu and doubles teams will each receive RM60,000 for their championship victories, while the team regu, which finished as runners-up, will be awarded RM50,000.

This historic achievement saw Malaysia end Thailand’s long-standing dominance, with victories in the inter-regu and doubles events on May 22, though the team regu fell short, losing 1-2 in the final on May 26. Speaking at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 during the return of the para bowling squad from South Africa, Yeoh emphasized the significance of this success for the nation and the athletes. Discussions are ongoing to reinstate sepak takraw as a core sport, and Yeoh suggested collaboration with higher education institutions for facility use, addressing the Malaysian Sepak Takraw Association’s request for a dedicated stadium.
