KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — The Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (Content Forum) has expressed full support for recent recommendations by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) Derek John Fernandez on the urgent need for regulatory measures governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in content creation and distribution. Fernandez emphasized the critical importance of curbing the misuse of AI technologies, such as deepfakes, which pose significant threats to public peace and national security. He called for a regulatory framework mandating clear disclosures when images or videos are generated by AI, to prevent misinformation and protect individuals from online fraud.
Content Forum Chairman, Rafiq Razali, stressed the collective responsibility in ensuring the safe use of AI in content creation, stating, “AI has immense potential to revolutionize the content industry, but this potential must be managed with careful consideration.” Highlighting recent incidents where deepfake videos featuring well-known public figures went viral and cases of AI-generated content being used to scam the unsuspecting public, Razali underscored the necessity of regulations to safeguard the community from digital deception. Content Forum CEO, Mediha Mahmood, added, “As we stand on the brink of widespread AI adoption, we must learn from past experiences. Pre-empting potential harms through swift and effective regulation is not just prudent—it is essential.”
