GEORGE TOWN, June 17 – The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has called on Malaysian authorities to investigate SHEIN products entering the country following alarming safety findings by the Seoul City government. Recent inspections revealed that seven out of eight children’s products tested from the popular online shopping platform contained dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals, including formaldehyde and phthalates. Notably, a pair of children’s shoes was found to have phthalate levels exceeding the safety limit by 428 times, posing severe risks to the reproductive, neurological, and developmental health of children.
Given SHEIN’s popularity among Malaysian youth, CAP stresses the urgency of immediate safety tests on products sold by the platform. They advise consumers to wash new clothes before wearing them, avoid brands with opaque manufacturing processes, and steer clear of items marketed as stain, water, or odour-resistant to minimize exposure to harmful chemicals. This proactive approach is crucial to safeguard public health amid growing concerns over the safety standards of rapidly expanding e-commerce platforms.
