KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 — Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the top global spot in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2024. USM ranked first in the peace, justice, and strong institutions category (SDG16) under the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). This recognition is attributed to USM’s outstanding research on peace and justice and its advisory role in government policies on academic freedom. Additionally, USM secured ninth place in the SDG 17 category on partnerships for the goals.

Despite the achievement, USM saw a significant drop in the overall category, falling to 18th place from last year’s fourth. However, it continues to excel in other areas, ranking 85th in climate action (SDG 13). This year, 29 Malaysian institutions participated in the rankings, demonstrating the nation’s growing commitment to the UNSDGs. Notably, Sunway University, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), and the University of Malaya (UM) also secured impressive positions in various SDG categories. Western Sydney University topped the overall global ranking, highlighting the increasing participation and achievements of Southeast Asian universities in addressing global challenges.
