PUTRAJAYA, June 14 — The Anwar administration today responded to calls by some factions to review Johor’s relations with the federal government, asserting that any demand made by state governments cannot supersede the Constitution. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil reiterated that Malaysia was founded on the spirit of federalism agreed upon by all states, including Johor.
The statement came amid grumblings over what some leaders in Johor perceived as unfair relations between the state and Putrajaya. Yesterday, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi called for 30 per cent of the state’s tax collection to be retained, a move observers say could test relations with the central government.
