NIBONG TEBAL, June 24 — Starting next month, Penang will re-enforce the Waste Segregation at Source (WSAS) policy to reduce solid waste management costs and protect the environment, announced State Local Government, Town, and Country Planning Committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye. Non-compliance with the policy could result in fines up to RM500. Originally implemented in 2017 but halted in 2020 due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the policy aims to reduce waste at landfills and maintain ecosystem balance.
The state government, along with the Penang Green Council, Penang Island City Council (MBPP), and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), has produced campaign materials to raise awareness about the WSAS policy. H’ng highlighted the importance of educating the public on waste segregation to achieve Penang’s goal of becoming a green and sustainable state by 2030. Additionally, he emphasized the financial and environmental benefits of proper waste management, noting Seberang Perai’s high recyclable waste percentage and the potential to achieve a 70 percent recycling rate by 2030.
