KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reassured the nation today that Malaysia’s prospective membership in the Brics intergovernmental organization would not disrupt domestic political stability. Addressing concerns in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar emphasized that Malaysia’s application process to join Brics is progressing and expects the country to be admitted as a “partner country” in the near future.
“Although the political systems of countries like China and Russia differ from ours, our focus remains on enhancing economic trade and cooperation,” Anwar stated during the Ministers’ Question Time. He highlighted the potential economic benefits for Malaysian traders, investors, and the broader economy through expanded networks and partnerships within the Brics framework.
Anwar underscored Malaysia’s intention to prioritize economic ties while maintaining diplomatic autonomy, contrasting this approach with its relationships within Western alliances and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) bloc. He expressed confidence that Malaysia’s alignment with Brics, which represents a significant portion of global GDP and trade, would bolster the country’s economic development without compromising its sovereignty.
