KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — Malaysia has provided substantial water subsidies to Singapore over the past six decades, totaling RM2.4 billion, according to former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. In his statement, Dr. Mahathir highlighted that Malaysia sells raw water to Singapore at 3 sen per thousand gallons, significantly lower than the potential price of 45 sen per thousand gallons.

Dr. Mahathir pointed out that this arrangement has resulted in an annual subsidy of RM39 million for Singapore, starting from the sale of 250 million gallons daily. The total subsidy from 1962 to 2023 amounts to RM2,379,000,000. He emphasized that Johor is at a loss due to this deal, as the water is drawn from the Johor River. Dr. Mahathir’s advice is to continue selling raw water at the current rate indefinitely.
