GEORGE TOWN, July 16 — The Penang Malay Association (Pemenang) and the Federation of Penang Malay Culture and Arts Associations (Gagungan) have expressed their disappointment over a promotional video for the George Town Festival 2024, claiming it only highlights Chinese and Indian cultures, neglecting Malay culture.
Tan Sri Mohd Yussof Latiff, President of Pemenang, criticized the “Here and Now” themed video for not promoting the spirit of unity and inclusivity in Penang, appearing to deny the existence of Malay culture in the state. “George Town Festival, held annually since 2010 to celebrate its UNESCO World Heritage Site status, aims to celebrate and preserve local arts, culture, and heritage. However, this issue has caused significant disappointment, particularly among the Malay community, a vital part of George Town’s social fabric,” he stated.
Mohd Yussof emphasized that the organizers have not given due recognition to Malay cultural activities and performances. Despite attempts to seek clarification, the responses from the organizers were reportedly dismissive, prompting calls for the Penang government and George Town World Heritage Incorporated to take full responsibility and ensure such oversights do not recur.
