KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — Malaysia’s Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, announced today that the government has no immediate plans to reintroduce a broad-based Goods and Services Tax (GST). The decision comes in response to the financial struggles faced by many Malaysians due to rising living costs.

“In light of the current economic conditions, the government will focus on enhancing the existing tax system and implement taxes that do not place an additional burden on vulnerable groups,” Amir Hamzah told Parliament. The priority remains on economic stability and protecting the financial well-being of citizens before considering new consumption taxes.
