PUTRAJAYA, July 29 — Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced today that Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, are the most compliant with Malaysian laws among social media platforms. Despite this compliance, Facebook remains a hotbed for online scams. Fahmi highlighted the urgency of addressing these cyber crimes, noting that while Meta platforms are generally responsive, other providers lag in taking action against such activities.

Fahmi provided compliance rates for various social media platforms: Facebook at 85%, Instagram at 88%, WhatsApp at 79%, TikTok at 76%, Telegram at 65%, and X (formerly Twitter) at a mere 25%. The non-compliance issues span laws like the Personal Data Protection Act, the Anti-Money Laundering Act, and the Communications and Multimedia Act. Fahmi also outlined the range of harmful content, including online gambling, scams, cyberbullying, and child pornography.

In response to rising cyber crimes, particularly scams, cyberbullying, and sexual crimes against children, Fahmi declared an intensified effort by Malaysian authorities. He stated that the police, the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would enhance their investigative and prosecutorial coordination. Fahmi also plans to meet social media representatives in Singapore next week to discuss improving compliance and tackling these pressing issues.
