KUALA LUMPUR, August 2 – DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has criticized Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek for her response to the controversy surrounding fundraising by breweries for vernacular schools. Lim, who represents Bagan, urged Fadhlina to serve as the education minister for all Malaysians, not just adhere to the views of PAS. His comments came after Fadhlina’s stern remarks on the issue, suggesting she should reconsider her stance as she is not a “PAS education minister.”
The controversy erupted after PAS objected to Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Aiman Athirah Sabu receiving a mock check with Tiger Beer’s logo at a fundraiser for SJK(C) Tche Min in Selangor. PAS claimed that the brewery’s involvement compromised the integrity of the event, equating it to normalizing alcohol in schools. In response, Fadhlina’s ministry stated it would not review or exempt schools from guidelines prohibiting donations linked to alcohol or gambling, while Tiger Beer denied making any donations, clarifying its role was limited to organizing performances at the fundraiser.
