KUALA LUMPUR, August 3 — Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has proposed the creation of a Malaysian Data Commission to enhance data protection and stimulate the growth of the country’s data centre market. This proposal aims to amend the Personal Data Protection Act 2010, with expected amendments to be tabled in Parliament by March or mid-2025.
Gobind emphasized the importance of strengthening the data centre sector amid increasing reliance on artificial intelligence and significant investments from global tech giants like Google and Microsoft. He indicated that the new commission would build on the existing data committee and commissioner roles, focusing on robust data policies and frameworks to secure and advance Malaysia’s data infrastructure.
