KUCHING, August 8 — The federal Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) has proposed transforming Sarawak into Borneo’s aerospace hub, akin to Subang in the Peninsular. Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, the minister of MITI, outlined this vision at the Joint Committee on Industrial Coordination (JBI) meeting with Sarawak’s government, chaired by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.

The proposal includes developing a new airport, establishing local airlines, and focusing on green aerospace industry talent from Sarawak’s universities. The plan also emphasizes integrating maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sectors and utilizing Sarawak’s renewable energy resources. Both MITI and Sarawak’s government are committed to collaborating on this initiative, with further developments expected in airport infrastructure and free trade zones, as well as the expansion of the Sama Jaya Industrial Zone.
