KUALA LUMPUR, August 18 – Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has proposed the introduction of special border passes for senior executives in the upcoming Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The initiative aims to address concerns about traffic congestion and facilitate smoother travel for top company officials between Singapore and southern Johor. Speaking at an Invest Johor event, Onn Hafiz emphasized that easing the movement of people is crucial to accelerating the success of the SEZ, which is expected to enhance economic cooperation between Malaysia and Singapore.
The proposed border passes would enable senior management officials to travel efficiently, though specific details about the passes, such as whether they would include priority clearance at immigration counters, have not yet been disclosed. Onn Hafiz also highlighted upcoming infrastructure developments, including the expansion of the North-South Highway and the integration of a public transport network in Johor Baru with the Johor-Singapore RTS Link, as part of broader efforts to reduce congestion and attract investment to the SEZ. The announcement follows a report indicating strong interest from Singaporean businesses in Johor, despite concerns about potential logistical challenges.
