KUALA LUMPUR, August 24 — The search and rescue (SAR) operation for an Indian tourist who fell into a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India will resume today after 17 hours of efforts yielded only the victim’s slippers. The victim, identified as 48-year-old Vijayaletchumy from Andhra Pradesh, India, disappeared into the sinkhole while walking with her family near the Malayan Mansion around 8.20 am yesterday.
Despite extensive efforts, including scuba teams combing the area, the victim has yet to be found. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the operation was suspended at 12.30 am due to heavy rain and poor visibility and will continue at 9 am today. The search faces challenges due to strong currents, hazardous gases, and sewerage risks. Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) has also been involved, inspecting a seven-kilometre stretch of sewer lines leading to the Pantai Dalam treatment plant, but no further evidence has been found so far.
