PUTRAJAYA, September 12 — Communication Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced today that the Malaysian government will not move forward with the proposed Domain Name System (DNS) rerouting plan. Instead, Fahmi has directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to enhance public engagement and seek broader feedback on internet safety measures.
The DNS rerouting, which would have required all internet searches to pass through ISP servers, was intended to improve website access control but faced significant backlash over privacy concerns and fears of government overreach. Fahmi emphasized that the priority is to make the internet safer, especially for children, and has instructed MCMC to explore alternative solutions with input from programmers and cybersecurity experts.
