KUALA LUMPUR, October 4 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has called on media organisations to immediately resolve salary arrears owed to their staff, following complaints from journalists about months of unpaid wages. Fahmi stressed that it is unacceptable for media practitioners to go unpaid for extended periods, urging employers to fulfill their obligations.
“Media organisations are obliged to settle salary arrears of their workers,” he said during his visit to South Korea. Fahmi also expressed his willingness to act as an intermediary between media workers and their employers to find a solution. His remarks follow demands from the National Union of Journalists of Malaysia (NUJM) and Gerakan Media Merdeka (Geramm), who urged the employers of The Malaysian Insight and The Vibes to immediately address the overdue payments.
Both unions have criticized the delay, calling it a form of oppression and a sign of weak management. Fahmi emphasized the importance of fair treatment in the media industry and expressed his support for journalists affected by the issue.
