BANGI, October 11 — PETRONAS, in collaboration with ASEAN energy sector leaders and global organisations, has launched the ASEAN Energy Sector Methane Leadership Programme 2.0 (MLP 2.0). Themed “Turning Capacity into Action,” MLP 2.0 builds on the success of the first Methane Leadership Programme, which ran from June 2023 to October 2024.

This initiative also marks the start of a partnership between PETRONAS and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) to establish the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Centre (METEC). MLP 2.0 aims to further reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector and supports the Global Methane Pledge, which over 150 countries, including Malaysia, have signed.

The programme will strengthen emissions reduction targets, foster collaboration between governments and businesses, and accelerate regional efforts to manage methane emissions through advanced technology. METEC, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, will focus on improving methane emissions management, with centres planned for Terengganu and Perak.
