KUALA LUMPUR, January 25 — Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is in the final stages of obtaining an Application Service Provider (ASP) Class Licence in Malaysia. Speaking on RTM’s On The Table programme, Fahmi shared that Meta is finalising documentation to meet the licensing requirements, while other platform providers, including Google and X (formerly Twitter), are undergoing compliance evaluations.
Highlighting the government’s focus on online safety, Fahmi stated that platforms exceeding Malaysia’s regulatory user threshold must adhere to licensing guidelines. He also addressed concerns about child safety and job scams on platforms like LinkedIn, emphasizing ongoing engagement with Microsoft to tackle these issues. “This is about ensuring safer internet experiences, especially for children and families, while upholding freedom of expression,” Fahmi affirmed.
