KUALA LUMPUR, October 22 — Two government lawmakers have questioned Malaysia’s ban on Waze for civil servants, seeking clarification on security risks involving other popular applications.
Chow Yu Hui (PH-Raub) asked how Waze differs from Google Maps, WhatsApp and Instagram, particularly when Waze has been owned by Google since 2013.
Kelvin Yii (PH-Bandar Kuching) also urged the government to explain whether other applications pose similar data security risks.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim earlier said the ban aimed to protect government information and personal data from potential misuse, citing Waze Mobile Ltd’s operations under Israeli law.
